This was a long time ago… I stumbled upon some songs. I remember the MF demo when I bought my GAS audio pre-amp and amp from that audio store along Saw Mill Run Blvd., in Pittsburgh…

What I remember more was the live performance of MF and his band, at the Blackhawk High School. I was three rows back, in the school auditorium, but I don’t quite remember when. Must have been the very late 70′s or early 80′s.

I can still hear that piercing trumpet… I also remember him giving all those young musicians a chance… It was a great concert. (And oh, so long ago)

Yangin

But my favorite of the CD is Get High (Remix)

Since then, have continued to add OOP LPs added from vinyl. Just passed 61,178 tracks. The latest LP is Ron Carter’s “Empire Jazz” LP from 1980.

Still have 861 left to go, and adding more every day. One of these days, I’ll get caught up. Check out Smooth’s “My Jazz World” blog. An incredible source of OOP material, all of superb quality. Top shelf gear and an ear for perfection makes this music available in the best quality available. I can’t say thanks enough.

I’ve been able to replace many old LPs that have long been lost, or that I have played to death.

That would have been unfortunate, since it was a wonderful night of some good jazz. Guess I got wrapped up in the New Moon event and almost overlooked what preceded the trip to LA.

Somewhere a few days before the concert, I stumbled upon the announcement. It almost seems like it was a spur of the moment affair, and didn’t have much advance publicity for some reason. But once I saw it, went straight to CenterTix to see if anything was available. I was surprised, with the concert only a few days away, that it wasn’t sold out.

I snagged a couple of tickets in the front row! But the amazing thing, after purchased the tickets for the Friday, November 13 concert, I received an email from The Breeze, KNIK 88.7 FM in Anchorage.
We went to lunch on Friday, he drove, and we stopped by KNIK. Gave him the tickets and off we go.

The concert was a benefit to raise money for Bye-Bye Bullies. It was a great show at the Atwood Concert Hall. This time, to me, was a better show, and more intimate than the last time Jeff Golub was in town. That was a couple of years ago, for a jazz Christmas tour, with several others.

Posted a couple of pics of the event on Flickr (slightly higher res), or in the gallery here.

Anchorage is small market. In late August, KNIK announced a change in programming. This was attributed to the down turn in the economy, and the need for ad revenue. That is a valid argument, until you look at the market.

KNIK, The Breeze, was the only jazz station in Anchorage. The decided to abandon this format, and go with the same old pop / light rock as almost every other station. I will admit, 105.7 disappeared from my radio presets. Not only can I get that programming “somewhere else” but with a better signal.

I actually went to the Tati site, and sent a ‘complaint.’ I usually don’t care, and don’t say anything. But for some reason, I decided to “say something” and left my email address. Apparently a few other people did the same.

On Sunday, September 27 I got an email… Huh… Anyway, it stated that jazz is back in Anchorage!

Looks like they did some FCC shuffles, getting rid of KABA, and relicensed KNIK. KNIK moved from 105.7 to 87.7. 105.7 is now KNLT. Smooth jazz followed KNIK to a new transmitter. Reception is so much better here along the lower Hillside, plus in the car.

Their main page says that you can listen on your iPhone. But, maybe in time. They were supported with Radiolicious on the iPhone. However, that stream is still pointed to 105.7 (which now doesn’t exist.) The “new” KNIK Internet stream is located here.

But these are small things. Attribute it to a new start.

In the end, listen in. The listeners need to support this venture if it is to survive. Maybe this is a wake up call. In any event, listen live in the Anchorage area, or via the Internet. Hope you enjoy.
