I was quite surprised to find my server had been somewhat “compromised” so to speak. I was always focused on fighting spam in email, but overlooked other vulnerabilities. Occasionally I would happen to notice strange wiki entry references in the logs. I never put two and two together until today. I used group permissions to override the default “unauthenticated user” and only permit those authorized users to post. Revisiting the iPad… Not that I have forgotten, or otherwise haven’t used this device, I thought more along the lines of “how” I use it. So, after all this time, I find that I don’t use 3G. I didn’t even “subscribe” this last month, and barely used tens of megabytes out of the 2GB I receive for $25USD from AT&T. I saw the notice on the blog admin pages… I saw the tweets… Ok, let’s go ahead and upgrade to the latest and greatest WordPress. And that’s when the trouble began. Been using the iPad for less than a week. Getting used to it, but this BlogPress app seems to work well. Seems like sometime yesterday, WordPress stopped working. My first thought was the circuit was down. Next (when the green lights were flashing) I thought there was a domain / DNS issue. But I could surf, and loaded other pages at theczechs.net. Really stumped, I looked at the files in the WP directory. Thought the site may have been hacked, but all looked fine (as far as I could tell.) Thought about a PHP problem, and potential PHP or other cache issues. I was exploring my options, and thinking through a restore from backup. I “play” with Windows. I “use” OS X. However, there are a few programs that still run under Windows only, and there just isn’t a suitable (or any) replacement for the Mac. A couple of things I only use very infrequently, such as Visio or AutoCAD, or even ArcGIS. For that reason, the Mac works well, and does the things I need so much better. I’ve been looking for software to allow me to post to my blog without using the (cumbersome) web admin interface. My goal, more specifically, is “free” software to accomplish this task. On my quest to figure out SEO, Search Engine Optimization. I still don’t understand (well, maybe I’m starting to) why my site doesn’t show in Google. This post includes a link to a purported ghost caught on a CNN video clip. The reporters didn’t mention it, but an astute viewer with keen eyes caught the apparition. Still playing with WordPress, the blog in general, and the server. Still have so much to learn. Someday, maybe, just maybe I will figure it out, but I doubt it. | ||||||
