Nichole907, I’m not sure I can help. Your best bet is to stop by a GCI Store, if that is possible. Those folks are more familiar with the iPhone these days and can likely help. If not, you could give them a call, but if it is a SIM problem, it might be easier for them to troubleshoot / help in person.

I don’t know if this is a SIM issue (which is my guess) or possibly your account. But, those folks should be able to check and assist.

Hi Jim, I was just wondering if you could help me out? I just bought an iphone 3g unlocked/jailbroken but when i go to put my GCI SIM card it says “No SIM card installed, then NO SIM on top left corner? I tried going to settings/general/network/cellular Data but i have no opt to enter the APN,MMSC,and Proxy. It only gives opt to turn cellular data on/off. I looked up the code on the “about” at the bottom and it is 06.15.00, model is MB046LL, version 4.2.1 (8C148). My SIM card looks fine i was just using it on a basic phone then would not work on this iphone. Can you please help??

Hi Jim,
I cant seem to get any caller ID on my iPhone 3GS. When I go to settings/phone the “Show my caller ID” is a lighter shade..meaning it cant be adjusted. All I ever get is Unknown or Blocked unless I am getting a call from another GCI cellular customer. Please help so that I can know who is calling on my iPhone.

I have a jailbroken iphone and ever since I switched to GCI for some reason every call I get comes in an unknown and my caller ID wont work, unless they are a GCI customer as well. When I went into to settings in order to “turn on caller ID” it will not let me turn it on, its like the function does work. Please help so I can know who is calling and get the most out of my 3GS. Thanks

Julia, welcome! First, I assume, everything was working correctly at first (voice, data, SMS, MMS, etc.)

If it worked once, let’s look at what might have changed… GCI, for the moment, is all EDGE. But they are building a 3G GMS network and it should be rolled out this summer / fall to “major metropolitan areas” (read: Anchorage, Fairbanks, and maybe Juneau.)

Until then… Let’s check a couple of things. First, make sure in Settings / General / Network, that 3G is turned off. After that, I have to ask some basic questions, since I have only been through Barrow a few times…

Does data work; i.e., can you surf or check email? Next, does SMS and MMS messaging work?

The issue with voice calls is more troubling. Can you receive calls without any problems?

You indicate the problems with placed calls… Do you have “decent” signal strength? If you only have one bar, that can sometimes be indicative of the problems you are seeing.

I know there has been some recent work in Barrow. Have you always had the problems, or just recently? Have you only seen the problem in one are of town, or is it all the time?

Sorry to ask such “simple” questions, but if it worked once, it should work the same again. I just am trying to eliminate all the possibilities.

I will admit, voice is not something I have a lot of experience with; it is usually data problems, so I am a bit out of my area.

Jesse, I apologize for taking so long to get back. You have probably already figured it out…

In case not, the baseband can be found under General / About. Scroll to the bottom and you will find a number, such as 05.11.07, 04.26.08, etc.
