I used the router Wednesday morning before departing the Slope. My flight left Deadhorse and traveled through Barrow on the way to Anchorage. I checked email, looked at my server, checked my webcam, and shut down for the flight home. And that, was the last time the device was operational… All in all, had a great trip. Really only spent a full day, having arrived on Monday afternoon from Anchorage, and departing on Wednesday morning (through Barrow) back home. It was 55F / 13C and sunny on Tuesday. There was just enough wind that the mosquitos didn’t eat you alive, but they were swarming thick. The caribou came up on the roadway, and are oblivious to the few vehicles that pass by. They end up just sauntering down the road at a leisurely pace. You dare not haze or harass the wildlife, so our life comes to a crawl… Literally. Hey, I wouldn’t want to go off in the tundra and stir up the bugs either. Governor Sean Parnell was sworn in as the 10th Governor of the Great State of Alaska. He entered in to the role, stepping up from the office of Lt. Governor when Sarah Palin resigned. Guess it doesn’t matter what anybody thinks now… Sarah Palin has resigned as Governor. I can’t think this will help any national aspirations, who wants a quitter. In any event, no one knows; probably not even her. Time will tell… One thing is sure, she certainly polarized the population. Here is Sarah Palin’s farewell speech… This morning, I started the install. I decided to “risk it” and didn’t do a clean, full install. Essentially I did the ‘upgrade’ since I didn’t want to lose what I have on this laptop. In my opinion, while this may not be the best approach, it is a real test. I would think most people would want to preserve their environment and simply “upgrade” the OS. We’ll see if in the end this was the best decision considering a pre-release operating system. Do you remember where you were the evening of July 20, 1969? Were you even born? Today marks the 40th Anniversary of man’s landing on the moon. Take a minute to think what you were doing… I remember it so vividly. I always followed NASA and think I watched most of the space launches, especially the Mercury and Gemini flights. I remember Apollo 1, and the disastrous fire. The remaining Apollo flights that tested all systems and circled the moon and returned. They all lead up to Apollo 11. A little bit of rain finally fell on Anchorage, Alaska today. It’s been warm and sunny and dry for a month or more. We certainly can’t complain. I had forgotten about the Denali Road Lottery entry, until my Mom sent an article from the ADN. So I followed the link and got in under the wire. There is a $10 entry fee, but instead of a paper check and a trip to the post office at the last minute, I went to pay.gov, and gave a CC to cover the fee. It actually worked fairly well… Right up to the point where I didn’t win. Again! I’ve been toying with picking up a portable cellular router for quite some time. At first glance, the Cradlepoint PHS300 seems to fit the bill. This device from 3GStore.com, combined with my ACS “Internet Key” (the Franklin Wireless CDU-680 CDMA wireless modem) made the perfect match. This weather has been phenomenal! More blue skies (well with a little smokey haze at times) and lots of sunshine. A summer to remember in Anchorage, Alaska. | ||||||
